
Environmental Impact Assessment
As a school with sustainability at the core of our mission, an understanding of the impact of our new campus on the local environment was critical. We have partnered with Aurecon to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and implement a five-year Environmental Management and Monitoring Plan (EMMP) to mitigate any project-related environmental impacts. The report and Appendices are available below.
In addition, we benefitted from the guidance of various Nature groups before beginning the work and after sharing the results of the study with them, and we are very grateful for their support. This helped us to tap into their expertise and experience in safeguarding Singapore’s natural heritage.
EIA Scope and Methodology
The study boundary covered the full site, as well as a 100-metre buffer zone, later expanded through collaboration with JTC to include an adjacent road and a temporary work site.
The EIA followed local regulatory requirements and adopted relevant International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards to ensure a high level of environmental conservation.
The study began in September 2024 and concluded in July 2026, ensuring that the full cycle for all species was observed. The main findings were:
- The site primarily consists of non-native secondary forest, scrubland, and various waterbodies.
- Surveys identified 26 flora species of conservation significance, including the nationally extinct grass Ischaemum rugosum. These flora species, will be salvaged and transplanted upon consultation with NParks.
- A total of 176 animal species were recorded, with 13 species of conservation significance noted, including the Leopard Cat, Straw-headed bulbul, Changeable hawk-eagle, Oriental Magpie Robin, Long-tailed Parakeet, Blue-eared Kingfisher, Long-tailed Macaque, Bamboo Bat, cf. Rebecca’s Sprite damselfly, Variable Featherlegs damselfly , Common Birdwing butterfly, Harlequin butterfly and Three Spot Gurami fish.
- Surface water quality and noise levels are generally within regulatory guidelines, though specific exceedances—such as high iron levels in water and occasional aircraft-related noise—were documented.
Aurecon has proposed comprehensive mitigation measures, including plant and aquatic fauna salvaging, wildlife shepherding (supporting wildlife in moving to adjacent forested areas), and light management.
The design for the built environment has sustainability at its heart. The goal is to optimisze the connections between the built environment and the natural landscape and this includes efforts to integrate the only identified conservation area into the campus design.
These measures are expected to significantly reduce environmental impact across both our construction and operational phases.

The Environmental Impact Assessment report was available for public feedback from 9 Apr 2026 to 8 May 2026. UWCSEA will consider all relevant public feedback before seeking final approval from the Government.
