In memory of Kaira Karmakar
Born to Gowri and Kamal Karmakar, on 21st February 2006 in New Delhi, Kaira grew up in India and Singapore. Kaira was an exceptional student who had myriad interests that she excelled in. Along with her many accomplishments, Kaira was the editor of UWCSEA magazine Interscol 2022–23, the chair of UWCSEA Dover Global Concern (Ladhak), co-founded UWCSEA Times, and was appointed as the Dy General Secretary of Dover Model UN. Her first novel ‘Chasing Winds’ was published in 2020. She was working on her second untitled book at the time of her passing. As a certified yoga trainer for children, Kaira would spend her weekends giving yoga lessons on mindfulness and gratitude to children in her community. She had a precocious talent for reading, writing, painting, and languages. She was most often commended for her compassion, empathy, and inspirational interaction with family, teachers, peers, and the underprivileged. Kaira left behind a set of over 150 artworks consisting of canvases, sketches, and watercolour art.
A writer, editor, debater, artist, painter, yoga trainer, multi-instrument player, philanthropist, perfumer, budding chef, and influencer, Kaira wore multiple hats with equal aplomb. Meticulous and organised to a fault, she achieved so much in her short life with a kind smile. As she blazed a trail, no friend or acquaintance was left behind. She collaborated, helped, supported, and shared her blessings freely. A high achiever, whether in academics, extracurricular activities, or personal life, Kaira could easily balance everything.
Her brother, Kanav Karmakar, family, and friends have been left a legacy, vision, and a blueprint by Kaira that will help them fulfill the big dreams she had to lead with kindness and compassion. She was a staunch believer in the privilege of a good education and making the most of the opportunities this world offered. The Kaira Karmakar Scholarship is instituted to provide the UWC education to a deserving scholar and to ensure that her positive impact on our community is forever.
In addition, in partnership with her family, the community has created the Kaira Karmakar Memorial Endowment at UWCSEA, which will support the Initiative for Peace. Hers is a lasting legacy of peace through compassion, friendship and focused action.
