Investigating Inequalities: Grade 9 Students Take Geography to the Singapore Streets

How do we measure the quality of life in a neighbourhood? Is it defined by the height of its buildings and the width of its pavements, or by the sense of community and the feeling of safety? For Grade 9 Geography students at UWCSEA Dover, answering these questions meant stepping out of the classroom and into the local neighbourhoods of Singapore.

As part of their Unit of Study “Unequal World” the students embarked on a field trip to Medway Park near the Dover Campus, and Bukit Gombak in the Western region of the island. They were tasked with investigating differences in the quality of life in the two neighbourhoods. But it wasn’t a simple exercise in making assumptions based on visual aesthetics. The students had to answer a core fieldwork question:

Is quantitative or qualitative data the most effective in measuring differences in quality of life between neighbourhoods in Singapore?

In preparation, students explored the nature of qualitative and quantitative, and primary and secondary data. They developed hypotheses about the effectiveness of the different data types and delved into sampling techniques. 

In the field, students collected quantitative data, such as measuring noise levels in decibels, pavement widths and counting litter. Simultaneously, they gathered qualitative data by conducting environmental quality surveys, judging the inclusivity and accessibility of the area, and rating the welcoming feel of the neighbourhoods.

Surprising Discoveries on the Ground

For many students, physically navigating these spaces illuminated disparities they hadn't previously noticed. 

People think that Singapore is such a small country so there's not a lot of differences. But actually some parts of the neighbourhoods are pretty different. Like the infrastructure or the environment around it. So it's pretty surprising."

Fellow student Jay found that the data challenged his preconceived notions about local housing. 

At first I had an assumption that HDB flats were generally not very comfortable, but after we went to the site and we collected our qualitative data... HDBs had some of the highest scores in multiple factors like parking and noise."

The students quickly realised that relying on just one type of data paints an incomplete picture. As Grade 9 student Mari pointed out, "I think some data misses out on the inequalities. Like when we're just ranking the sidewalk length, for example, that might not show the litter or how loud the area is."

Dan Orr, Head of High School Geography, Dover Campus, explains how understanding local inequalities helps students grasp why different types of data matter in geographical investigations and, most importantly, real-life contexts.

"Students need to be skilled not just in how to collect data, but in knowing exactly what data to collect," Dan notes. "The exercise emphasises the importance of using evidence to form judgements. It shows students that while decisions shouldn't be based on opinions alone, those opinions still carry weight. We need both objective data and subjective views to make good decisions—which is a foundational skill across all our courses at UWCSEA."

A Mission-Aligned Approach to Geography

At UWCSEA Dover, the Grade 9 and 10 Geography curriculum has been intentionally designed and aptly named "United World Geography" (UWG) to better reflect the College's mission of fostering a peaceful and sustainable future.
The ultimate goal of the "Unequal World" unit goes beyond simply identifying issues; it is about equipping students to become active problem-solvers. 

The fieldwork required students to look critically at accessibility challenges, such as narrow pavements or the need for dropped kerbs and wheelchair ramps. Following the trip, the students analysed their findings to propose actionable solutions and recommendations for urban planning. They evaluated not just what needs to change, but also the economic and political challenges that make implementing these solutions difficult in the real world.

For the students, this real-world application is exactly what makes the UWG course so engaging. “When you live in one part of Singapore and then you go out on this kind of trip, you realise how different it is, it's pretty surprising,” said Philippa, Grade 9, UWCSEA Dover. 

"I personally really enjoy Geography as a subject because compared to other subjects it's much more practical," says Jay. "We can also see how it applies to real life and with our current unit on inequality, we can make observations in our day-to-day lives and relate them to our unit."

As Dan summarises, "Geography is such a mission-aligned subject, we're always looking at the idea of a sustainable future: What are the issues and then, how can we come up with solutions?" 

Through hands-on investigations like the Bukit Gombak and Medway Park field trip, Grade 9 and 10 students are doing exactly that—learning how to measure, understand, and ultimately shape a more equitable world.
