Programme overview

Guest speaker Bharat Anand shared how experiences from Harvard Business School's move to online learning over the past decade helped to craft the response of Harvard University to the COVID-19 pandemic, as it moved to an online remote learning model, almost overnight.

As a frame for the discussion, Carla Marschall, Director Teaching and Learning at UWCSEA East, launched the evening with a short provocation on what a UWCSEA future could look like, drawing from our experience of remote learning, scenarios presented by the OECD and the hyper-local nature of learning on our Singapore campuses since August 2020.

As a lens for the moderated Q&A discussion that followed, UWCSEA Grade 11 students shared their questions on the possible impact that digital transformation might have on the future of education, and what might be important for them, before Bharat took questions in a moderated discussion.


Bharat Anand

Bharat is the Vice Provost for Advances in Learning at Harvard University and the Henry R. Byers Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. 

Professor Anand is an expert in digital strategy, digital marketing, and corporate strategy. His work has examined competition in content industries, focusing on two central challenges that firms increasingly face: getting noticed and getting paid. He created Harvard Business School’s first executive program on digital strategies for media companies. He has written over 50 articles and case studies, and his scholarly work has received various awards and been profiled in a range of media outlets. His work on digital transformation has influenced startups and established companies worldwide, and he has advised organisations across the globe.

His book The Content Trap: A Strategist’s Guide to Digital Change has received acclaim for its perspective on strategy and digital transformation. It was named as one of Fast Company’s top ten business books of 2016, and Bloomberg’s “Best Books of 2017.” 

In 2014, Bharat helped create and launch the digital learning platforms for Harvard Business School Online (formerly, HBX). HBSO’s virtual classroom has been described by Fortune as the “Classroom of the Future”. In his current role as Vice Provost, Bharat has led Harvard University’s efforts to formulate, communicate, and implement strategic priorities around online learning, and to leverage technology to create more effective teaching tools, strategies, and resources for residential teaching across the University.  Since this March, Bharat has been a part of the central leadership efforts to support and oversee the University’s transition to remote teaching. 

Bharat is a renowned teacher and a two‐time winner of the “best teacher award” at Harvard Business School. He received his B.A. in economics from Harvard College magna cum laude, and his PhD in economics from Princeton University. He is a recipient of the Greenhill Award for outstanding contributions to Harvard Business School.  

Bharat is an alumnus of UWC Adriatic, and was a member of its first graduating class (1982-1984).

Carla Marschall

In December 2019 Carla was appointed Director of Teaching and Learning at UWCSEA East, having first joined UWCSEA Dover as the Infant School Vice Principal in August 2016. She began working on UWCSEA's curriculum articulation project in 2017, taking on the Dover Campus post of Head of Curriculum Development and Research in addition to her role as Vice Principal. In August 2018, she moved to the full-time position of Head of Curriculum Development and Research for the College. 

Carla holds a Masters in Elementary Education from Columbia University’s Teachers College and has recently finished a second Masters in Applied Educational Leadership and Management with the Institute of Education, University of London. Passionate about curriculum design for young children, she is especially interested in the role of the curriculum to help students develop critical and creative thinking skills. A workshop leader and concept-based curriculum and instruction trainer, she also consults other international schools interested in restructuring their programmes and, together with educator Rachel French, co-authored Planning for Concept-Based Inquiry which was published in 2018. 

In her role as Head of Curriculum Development and Research, Carla was instrumental in designing UWCSEA's first micro-credential 'Planning for Concept-Based Teaching and Learning' which is offered through Digital Promise.
