The UWC Refugee Initiative

The global refugee crisis is overwhelming:

  • 23.5 million people are currently displaced
  • 50% of those are under the age of 18

The UWC Refugee Initiative, run in association with the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is aiming to offer 100 UWC scholarships every year to students of refugee or stateless status.

Lack of access to education is a major issue affecting young refugees, internally displaced and persecuted people. They are five times more likely to be out of school than more fortunate young people.

For many years UWC has educated refugees from conflict hotspots like Syria, Palestine, Yemen, Colombia and Guatemala. UWC is experienced in this area - on average around 5% of our students in the IB Diploma years already come from a refugee, displaced or persecuted background.

Refugee communities need future leaders with strong abilities, social consciousness and drive for peace and reconciliation.

Together, we can inspire more young people who may be losing hope and use the power of education to make the world a better and more equal place for all.

A gift of any amount will support promising students of refugee or stateless status to realise their potential through a transformational
UWC education.
