Sports Science is available at Dover Campus in Grades 9 and 10. At East Campus its available in Grade 10.
The Sports Science curriculum is designed to support student well-being by promoting a deep understanding of the physical and psychological factors that contribute to a healthy and active lifestyle. Through a dynamic blend of theoretical study, experiential learning, and practical application, students will explore key areas including biomechanics, physiology, psychology, nutrition, and injury prevention. By synthesising these topics, the course offers an understanding of how the human body functions and adapts in response to physical activity. Students will actively participate in hands-on practical, critically analyse case studies, and apply scientific principles to real-world situations, cultivating an understanding of the intricate factors that drive optimal performance and promote overall wellbeing.
The curriculum is organised into:
Exercise Physiology and Nutrition
- Students explore how the body functions during exercise, including the cardiorespiratory and energy systems, and the role of nutrition in supporting performance and recovery. (Dover and East campuses, Grades 9 and 10)
- Students learn how to design and implement safe, effective training programmes, apply fitness testing to monitor and improve aerobic capacity, and adopt healthy lifestyle behaviours that enhance overall wellbeing and longevity. (Dover Campus Grade 9, East Campus Grade 10)
- Students build knowledge and skills to optimise both personal fitness and quality of life through exploring the principles of training, recovery strategies, and the connections between physical activity, health, and performance. (Dover Campus Grade 9, East Campus Grade 10)
Biomechanics: Forces and Movement
- Students explore how the musculoskeletal system, biomechanics, and movement analysis work together to produce and enhance human movement. (Dover Campus Grade 9, East Campus Grade 10)
- Students develop insights into performance and how it can be measured, improved, and supported through the study of body mechanics, fitness components, and evolving technologies. (Dover Campus Grade 10)
Sports Psychology and Motor Learning
- Students investigate how individual differences and emotional regulation influence athletic performance under pressure. (Dover Campus Grade 10)
- Students examine motivation, motor learning, and coping strategies, they develop an understanding of how athletes acquire skills, manage emotions, and adapt techniques to optimise outcomes. (Dover Campus Grade 10)
Practical Skills
- Students develop the ability to collect, analyse, and interpret data to make informed decisions about health and performance.
- Students apply research to test hypotheses, identify relationships, and draw meaningful conclusions.
I enjoy designing practical investigations that give students the opportunity to use Sport Science technologies like heart rate monitors to collect real-time data and analyze it themselves.
