College Service

Dover Service IS US_IS college service clean up

Participation in College-based service provides students an opportunity to put the UWCSEA values into practice on a daily basis.

A key aim of College Service is to foster the growth of empathy and to encourage students to become more sensitive to the needs of others. This is especially important in such a large school community, and one which includes students from such a variety of backgrounds.

In age-appropriate ways, students are encouraged through participation in our structured Service programme to develop an understanding of their own role within their classroom community, and then extend that to how their grade-level community fits within the school. Older students support and lead other students undertaking their own service projects, provide sports leadership or coaching or work alongside their peers and younger students on environmental sustainability projects. They are responsible for organising community events, approving new Services, leading workshops, and up-skilling their peers.

By learning about others and their own place in communities, students develop fairness, kindness and respect and are able to put these qualities into practice in their daily interactions with others. They are able to identify possible needs and to be able to discuss actions that might meet those needs in a sustainable way.

Involvement in College Service also encourages students to take on new challenges and to learn and develop valuable skills such as communication, teamwork, planning and leadership. As some services are shared between the different schools, the older students often become role models and mentors to their younger counterparts.

Examples of College Service are varied: recycling and green campus initiatives, working with younger students in the playground, peer-to-peer support, sports coaching, helping younger students develop skills in activities such as art, dance and music.

Leadership

As students move through the school, College Service also encourages students to take on leadership roles, and they are provided avenues to develop leadership skills within their areas of interest. From the Junior School up, teachers and service programme teacher-facilitators encourage and mentor students as they build their capacity as leaders. Student Councils for Junior, Middle and High School work alongside Service Executive groups to plan and coordinate activity on campus involving their peers.

Students are empowered not only to take personal action from their very first years in school, but to plan awareness campaigns, to speak in assemblies to peers and other students. They are also asked to volunteer to support and eventually run service events in support of their chosen project throughout the year. There is an application and selection process for all leadership groups.
