English as an Additional Language (EAL)

While the language of instruction in our learning programme is English, we welcome learners with a wide range of languages and language experience.

Staff Learning 17

Nearly 60% of our community are multilingual, and have told us that they communicate in two or more languages when at home. Across the College, our linguistic diversity encompasses speakers of 78 different languages.

Our mission is reflected in the deliberate diversity created by through our admissions policy. We understand that language learning can further our mission. Over the past five years, we have worked to identify ways in which we can support linguistic diversity in our community, and as a result have developed a K–12 programme.

In 2018, the UWCSEA Strategy identified a need for an increased focus on creating learning environments that are more accessible to learners whose first language is not English. You can read more about our approach to embracing linguistic diversity and the strategies we are carefully implementing on each campus so as to better support students, teachers and our community.

We enrol EAL learners from K1 to Grade 12 and all teachers support students in acquiring the language skills they need to thrive in the curriculum. For our youngest students this means supporting them to develop literacy skills together with their classmates, and employing strategies to support them in their classrooms.

Formal EAL instruction is available for students in Grades 1 to 12. These classes are delivered by a specialist teacher. They are designed to support learners who have had less exposure to English, or who speak English as a second, third or even fourth language. The goal of the classes is for students to acquire skills in English that support their academic learning and their ability to use English fluently and accurately in general communication.

The goal is for students to transition out of the EAL programme as they move up the school; the time that they take to do this relies on a number of interrelated factors. Some students are in EAL for one or two terms only; others require a year or two of instruction.

In addition to this instruction, there is some provision, based on needs, for extra, individual EAL support. In some cases, EAL teachers work with EAL learners in classes from other areas of the curriculum.

Depending on the campus and grade of the students, some EAL learners will take a Language other than English (LOTE); others will have their EAL lessons in a time when their classmates are taking their LOTE class. More details are provided below.

Joining our EAL programme

We welcome applications from students of all ages who may need to enrol in our EAL programme. While places are limited based on the number of students who we can effectively cater to in each grade, we are very happy to consider EAL applications.
