This article explores how a team of Grade 1 teachers in Singapore used place- based learning to support language learning while creating a sense of belonging.
Nick Alchin took up the role as Head of UWCSEA East in January 2021. One year into his appointment, the East Campus community will be familiar with his name—hundreds of emails have been sent in his name as we navigate the pandemic—but many will not yet have had a chance to meet the passionate educator.
In 2020, under the leadership of Carma Elliot, College President, the College embarked on a review of our values, which were inherited from the UWC movement as a series of long sentences in an unusual mixture of values, dispositions and behaviours. The movement had reviewed and updated their model, but the College had yet to follow suit. From the start, the project was conceived as a ‘Values in Action’ project, which would result in not just a revised set of values, but clarity around the behaviours that would bring those values to life.
As we look ahead to the College’s 50th anniversary in 2021/2022, we celebrate the important role Service has played in our history. At the heart of the UWC mission, Service enables students to actively contribute to resolving social and environmental problems, both locally and globally.

As a department, we wanted to compare student participation in Sports and Wellness for Life opportunities at UWCSEA East, in 2019/2020 (S1&2) and in 2020/2021(S1&2). We were curious to see if there was a significant difference in participation rates during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students have a broad and balanced range of subjects, including the core subjects of English, Humanities, Mathematics and Science. In addition, courses in the Arts, Languages, Physical Education and other exploratory subjects in areas such as Design and Technology ensure that students are able to develop across a range of subjects.
The Middle School programme intentionally refines core interdisciplinary skills initiated in many inquiry-based Primary School curricula. Students have subject specialist teachers—who specialise in teaching Middle School age students—guiding them in fundamental subject-specific skills required for higher studies.
