Parents' responsibilities

It is important to note that our entire system of providing appropriate medical support for your child in the school and on trips depends on timely and accurate information provided by parents through the online medical questionnaire. Please ensure that you disclose ANYTHING in your child's medical history that may have any impact on decisions that we make to ensure their health, safety and wellbeing.

All medical information is very important, particularly when your child travels on an overseas trip, as these details are shared with class teachers, the school office, school nurses, Physical Education and Outdoor Education staff in order to provide the best possible care for your child.

Online medical questionnaire: Parents are required to complete/update the online medical questionnaire annually, prior to a residential trip and following any significant change in their child’s medical status, e.g., any medical and socio-emotional conditions, and regular prescription or over-the-counter medications. Once the medical questionnaire is received, a nurse will assess the information and decide if further action is required. Click here for more information.

Some students with a chronic medical condition or severe allergy will need to have a Medical Action Plan. This provides information and step-by-step instructions needed in the event of an emergency such as an anaphylactic reaction, or guidance on how to manage a chronic condition such as diabetes or asthma. The plans are devised by College nurses in conjunction with the student's parents and are required to be signed off by parents before the College can be expected to start to manage significant medical conditions.

Getting in touch with you - Parents who are travelling: We understand that situations occasionally arise that necessitate parent(s) to be out of Singapore for brief periods of time. It is advisable for you to provide one or two alternative local contact numbers in case of an emergency where parent(s) are not contactable. Please note, a domestic helper does not qualify as the sole guardian for the student(s) and that the authorised guardian must be an adult family member or a close family friend aged 21 and above.

Personal accident insurance: In case of an accident on campus, we encourage parents to have personal accident insurance coverage as any cost resulting from injuries sustained whilst at school will not be borne by the College.

Infectious diseases

In accordance with Ministry of Health Regulations, the College will not accept children with infectious diseases unless parents provide a Medical Certificate/Memo from the doctor to certify that he/she is fully recovered. A medical certificate confirming the diagnosis of an infectious disease/condition is required before the relevant class or grade parents are notified with a UWCSEA medical advisory.

In order to reduce the risk of spreading infection, under no circumstances should your child be in school or commence a school trip if he/she has any of the following symptoms in the previous 24 hours, with or without medication:

  • fever above 37.5 °C
  • diarrhoea
  • vomiting
  • unexplained skin rash - please see a doctor to confirm the diagnosis
  • eye infection - please see a doctor to confirm the diagnosis

Children who have the symptoms listed above will be excluded from school and school trips until resolved for 24 hours. A doctor's certificate may be required to confirm that the symptoms are not associated with an infectious agent or they are no longer a threat to the health of other children during lessons and Activities/Service e.g. some skin rashes are not infectious. Your kind consideration towards other children and their good health is appreciated.

If any signs and symptoms of illness appear during school hours, you will be contacted immediately to arrange for your child to go home.

It is recommended to see a doctor if you are in doubt about your child’s ability to come to school. Children must stay at home until they are fully recovered and no longer contagious.

Minor respiratory infections are common and don’t always require your child to miss school. However, persistent coughing and runny noses can spread infection to other students and may prevent your child from getting a good night’s rest.

Head lice is a common and persistent problem in many schools. College nurses do not check students for hair lice but do provide advice and evidence-based information on how to manage infestations. If your child has head lice, he/she may remain in school. You will be notified and sent a Head Lice Advisory with recommended treatment to follow. This advisory will also be shared with class/year parents, so they may initiate treatment. Your child’s right to privacy and confidentiality will not be compromised.

Medication

Students are not permitted to carry or self-administer any medication on campus or on school trips, including over-the-counter medication. If your child requires administration of medicine whilst at school or on a school trip, it must be submitted to the College or Primary Clinic to be reviewed by a College nurse.

Medication must:

  • be in the original manufacturer-administered packaging
  • have a valid expiry date visible
  • have all instructions written in English
  • be supported with a signed UWCSEA Permission to Give Medication Form (PTGM) form
  • be declared on your child’s online medical form (CIMS) along with details of the condition the medication is prescribed for.

Medication will not be administered if:

  • if it is expired
  • if it is a prescription only medication (POM) without a written prescription. This includes respiratory inhalers eg Ventolin and Seretide which often have the prescription label fixed to the box, rather than the device
  • if it is an over-the-counter (OTC) medication without the manufacturer's administration instructions
  • if it is not in the original manufacturer's box, bottle or blister pack
  • without a correctly completed PTGM form.

UWCSEA staff on trips and College nurses administer age-appropriate, over-the-counter medications to students as deemed necessary with the consent of parents. Such medication includes but is not limited to paracetamol, antihistamines, stomach antacids, throat lozenges, antidiarrhoeals, ointments/creams and oral rehydration salts.

Parents are advised to submit medication and PTGM forms well in advance of a trip departure, in order to ensure there is time to resolve any issues. The College is unable to accept or administer alternative medication such as Homeopathic, Ayurvedic therapies, TCM, vitamins or supplements.

*Medication classified by the Singapore Health Sciences Authority (HSA) as Prescription Only Medication (POM) cannot be accepted without a prescription issued by the prescribing doctor. The prescription must state your child's name as well as the name, dosage, route and frequency of administration of the medication.

A copy of the Medication Policy can be provided upon request.

On campus

In the event of an accident, parent/guardian will be contacted depending on the severity of the injury sustained.

If an ambulance is called, a UWCSEA staff member will accompany your child/ward to the hospital and will remain there until a family member or guardian arrives.

SCDF emergency ambulances 995 will only convey patients to the nearest designated government hospital so that they can receive immediate medical attention.

In the event of parental/guardian preference for a private hospital, the alternative number to dial for a non-SCDF/non-emergency ambulance is 1777. Cash payment will be paid to the ambulance service upon arrival to the private hospital. All expenses incurred in seeking medical aid for the child will be borne by the parent/guardian.

Local/Overseas trip

Should an accident or illness occur during a local or overseas trip, the trip leader or first aider will provide first aid. He or she will make the decision whether the student should continue the trip, transfer back to the College Clinic/back to Singapore for further treatment.

In the event of an accident during an overseas trip, the Trip Leader will contact International SOS for medical advice.

Immunisations

It is important to note that Diphtheria and Measles are compulsory by Singapore Law and this is a prerequisite for a valid student pass in the country. If your child has been medically exempted, the College requires confirmation in writing from a Singapore-based medical practitioner authorising the exemption.

Please refer to the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule, Singapore.

For overseas trips, please consult your family physician for recommended travel vaccination/s. You may refer to this link for more information.
