The UWCSEA IB Visual Art students gathered on Saturday, 18 January at the Special Events Lounge of Art Stage Singapore to attend the prize presentation of the UWCSEA IB Visual Art Competition 2014.
The event was attended by high profile guests from the local and regional art scene: Lorenzo and Maria Elena Rudolf, Lito and Kim Camacho, contemporary artist Heri Dono, Dr. Oei Hong Djien and the members of judging panel: Laila Azra, Artist-in-residence at UWCSEA Dover; Kathy Lai, Alumna of UWC-USA and CEO of the National Arts Council (NAC) of Singapore; Woon Tai Ho, Art Correspondent and Director of the Media and Marketing Group of National Gallery of Singapore; and Ikkan Sanada, owner of Ikkan Art International Gallery.
A guided tour of Art Stage Singapore 2014 was offered to guests.
Forty-seven high quality works were entered, and the Visual Arts Department shortlisted 17 pieces to hand over to the judging panel to select the final winners. The three winners received a crystal trophy donated by Swarovski and an expenses paid, fully-guided study trip to Yogyakarta to visit artists’ studios, galleries and museums sponsored by Christie’s Fine Arts Storage Services. The talented winners are:
1. 1st place: Sophie Hackett (Grade 12)
2. 2nd place: Hanna Varga (Grade 12)
3. 3rd place: Lucy Yu (Grade 12)
Jonathan Cheong (Grade 11) and Catherine Gollifer (Grade 12) were also selected to receive merit awards.
The event was made possible thanks to Patrons of the Arts, Art Stage Singapore, Marina Bay Sands, Christie’s Fine Art Storage Services and Swarovski.
The organising committee, including parents Henny Scott, Nicola Harayda and Kiki Tandon, worked with the Visual Arts Department and enjoyed the full support of members of the local and international art scene such as Kong Kum Hoong, Dr. Oei Hong Djien and artist Heri Dono from Yogyakarta.
