PACE local outreach held its Chinese New Year celebrations at the HCA Day Hospice on 10 February 2017.
Carol Lam, who heads the UWCSEA East Chinese community, organised and mobilised her cohort in preparing a sumptuous lunch spread. It was an impromptu cooking class for the rest of the volunteers as we eagerly learned to pleat dumplings and roll cat ear noodles. Fried mixed vegetables, spicy chicken, fried fish fillet, steamed egg, silken tofu with fish, leek and egg rolls, fruit and cupcakes rounded off the massive feast we served for lunch.
CNY celebrations would not be complete without the hong baos, the oranges and the lo hei which the Dover mums generously contributed. We are grateful to Shen Gullery who couldn't be there this year but helped organise this part of the festivities beforehand. She had likewise produced a list of Chinese New Year greeting phrases for the volunteers to say to the patients as they presented them the gifts of hong bao and oranges.
Once again, the constituents from the Gek Poh Ville CC, led by Michelle Koh, brought the house down with their rendition of various Chinese pop/festive songs. There was also dancing and several costume changes to the delight of the HCA folks. As always, the CC members were on hand to lead our prosperity toss following their dazzling musical performance.
As one volunteer aptly put it "What a lot of noisy, boisterous fun we had that morning!" We cannot thank enough the people who put all of these together. Happy new year to all! May you all be blessed with prosperity and health in the year of the rooster!
