Term 1 Wrap Up 2024-2025 (Parents’ Association)
Communications Team, UWCSEA
18 December 2024
As Term 1 comes to a close at UWCSEA Dover, the Parents’ Association (PA) reflects on a dynamic and engaging start to the academic year. With an array of activities and community events, the PA has fostered connection, cultural celebration, and wellbeing among our parents, students, and staff. From vibrant cultural showcases to insightful workshops and fun-filled activities, here’s a look back at some of the highlights that brought our community together.
Dancing, Learning, and Laughing with the PA Activities Team
The Activities Team had an incredible time combining learning and fun with the launch of engaging Learning Chinese and Mahjong sessions, capped off by the high-energy excitement of a Super Simple Dance event!
Over 30 enthusiastic parents joined in, dancing to the lively Latin beat of "Magalenha". The room was filled with laughter and camaraderie as participants worked up a sweat while perfecting their moves. These engaging sessions will continue into the term, so be sure to check eBrief and Classlist for updates and opportunities to join!
Gaming and Innovation: Esports with IDEAS Hub
The PA Activities Team, in collaboration with the IDEAS Hub, hosted a special Esports session for parents.
Parents had the chance to experience Mario Kart, one of the most popular games in our school’s Esports programme, and truly immerse themselves in the world of gaming their children love. Excitement filled the room as parents competed for the coveted Mario Super Star trophies, thoughtfully 3D-printed by the talented IDEAS Hub team.
The event also featured an insightful discussion with Luke Milburn, Head of Innovation, who offered valuable perspectives on why gaming captivates students and how it serves as a platform for creativity, strategy, and connection. Parents walked away with a better understanding of their children’s virtual world and the innovative role gaming plays in their education.
A Joyous Diwali Celebration
The Parents’ Association brought the UWCSEA Dover community together for a truly memorable Diwali celebration. The event began with an auspicious lamp-lighting ceremony led by Mr. Cameron Hunter, setting a warm and traditional tone for the festivities. Families and children enjoyed a vibrant day filled with cultural activities, games, and performances.
The school community was treated to incredible dance performances that showcased India’s rich cultural heritage, and the henna station was bustling as participants adorned their hands with intricate, beautiful designs. Adding to the festive atmosphere were delicious Indian dishes and desserts, generously prepared by Sodexo.
The event was made possible by the dedication and enthusiasm of the Indian community volunteers, whose efforts created an unforgettable celebration. The joy and energy of the day left everyone eagerly anticipating next year’s Diwali festivities.
Empowering Conversations on Menopause
The PA Mental Health and Wellbeing Team hosted an impactful panel discussion focused on understanding and managing menopause. Expert panelists, including Dr Tash Mirando (Women’s Health Physician), Jennifer Lewin (Functional Practitioner), and Jieun Wrigley (Functional Nutritionist), shared valuable insights on recognising symptoms and exploring both lifestyle-based and conventional solutions.
The event empowered parents with practical tools and knowledge to navigate their own menopause journeys with confidence. Through open conversations, the panelists fostered a supportive environment, encouraging parents to prioritise their wellbeing and embrace this stage of life with awareness and care.
Embracing Cultural Differences in Parenting
Cultural understanding took center stage at the PA’s interactive workshop, Embracing Cultural Differences in Parenting, led by intercultural expert Roosmarijn Emmering.
Nearly 100 parents participated in this dynamic two-hour session, which explored themes of cultural diversity, conflict resolution, and breaking stereotypes. Thought-provoking discussions encouraged parents to reflect on how unexpected cultural clashes can influence their perspectives and shape family dynamics.
The workshop served as a powerful reminder of the importance of embracing differences–whether in mindset, language, or values–to build stronger, more inclusive communities. Roosmarijn highlighted how children in multicultural settings often develop greater empathy and tolerance, while adults must continue nurturing their own cultural awareness to guide this growth. Together, parents and children can foster a world built on understanding, respect, and harmony.
Boarders’ Sweet Surprise
The Dover PA Boarding House Team brought smiles to the faces of our boarders with a thoughtful donut delivery on Monday afternoon. It was a simple yet heartfelt gesture that spread cheer as the term came to an end. The boarders’ smiles and gratitude were a wonderful reminder of the importance of connection and community. The PA wishes all our boarders a happy and restful holiday!
As we wrap up Term 1, we extend our gratitude to all the volunteers, participants, and school staff who made these events such a success. The Parents’ Association remains committed to creating meaningful opportunities for connection, learning, and celebration throughout the year. We look forward to an even more exciting Term 2, with more activities, workshops, and events planned to engage and inspire the UWCSEA Dover community.
