For Vicki Hill, Physical Education and Sports Science Teacher, Dover Campus, growth lives just beyond the comfort zone.

You know that sweet moment in the morning when you hit the snooze button on your alarm clock? Just around that time, one of our teachers is finishing up her training for the day before heading to UWCSEA, Dover Campus to start her working day. Vicki Hill, teacher, coach, athlete and Ironman, is not only a source of motivation and admiration for her students, but the Physical Education and Sports Science teacher is also an inspiration for the whole school and for the wider Ironman community.

The idea of competing in an Ironman is nigh on impossible for most of us. The actual thought of competing in an event that includes a 3.86km swim, a 180.26km bike ride, and a full marathon of 42.185km is mind-boggling. For Vicki, transitioning to full Ironman was a natural progression, building on her experience competing in marathons and shorter-distance triathlons.

It is not just about crossing the finish line for Vicki–although it is, of course, as her goal during the event is to finish on the podium if possible. More importantly, it’s about the desire to challenge herself in the ultimate test of endurance and grit. It requires months of preparation; early mornings, long training hours, and all the while working in her full-time role.

Through leading by example, Vicki teaches her students about resilience, goal-setting and the importance of physical and mental health.  She shows her students that achieving big dreams starts with taking those first small steps. Her message is clear: no matter where you start, with discipline, consistent effort, and self-belief, you can achieve things you once thought were not possible.

Vicki serves as an incredible role model for her students, illustrating the core values our school strives to instil. Through her actions, they see the power of hard work, perseverance and the courage to push boundaries. She does not merely talk about it, she embodies it.

Vicki recently qualified to participate in the Kona World Ironman Championship in Hawaii in October 2025. We will be following her race on the app and through updates from her support team and we will be wishing that 2025 is her year.

Ms. Hill played a significant role in nurturing my love for sports, running and healthy lifestyle. As an incredible mentor and role model with countless achievements, she is someone who I will always hold in the highest regard.

Vicki was my cross-country coach and Sports Science teacher, and she made a lasting impression on me from a young age. Her passion for the sport and dedication to her own athletic pursuits, including competing in Ironmans, inspired me to embrace running as more than just a school activity. Today, as a frequent runner and marathon competitor, I credit Vicki for igniting my interest in the sport and instilling in me the perseverance and drive to constantly strive for improvement.
