Feven Moges Naba ‘19: From an NC scholar to a Knight-Hennessey Scholarship
Congratulations to Feven on being selected to join the 2024 cohort of Knight-Hennessy Scholars at Stanford University, where she will pursue a PhD in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on microfluidic diagnostic devices.
She had previously graduated from Earlham College and Columbia University as a dual-degree student with bachelor’s degrees in physics and biomedical engineering. She aspires to make healthcare more affordable and accessible, particularly in resource-limited settings, by developing innovative medical devices. What an inspirational journey she’s had since arriving at UWCSEA East as a National Committee scholar from Ethiopia!
This achievement is not solely my own; it reflects the unwavering support and guidance of my family, friends, and mentors. It truly took a village to reach this pivotal point, and I am profoundly grateful to everyone who played a part in my journey.
Gavin Mac ‘94: New single and debut album out next month
If you’re a fan of modern alternative country, do check out Gavin’s upcoming album with title track, “Make You Feel” scheduled for release on September 5!
Spanning influences from ranging from John Mayer through to Eric Clapton, Gavin shares,
My goal was to present a polished set of modern contemporary songs, that each incorporate a nostalgic cue, be it the narrative, instrumentation, or driven. In absence of these recordings being easily boxed into a popular genre or genre subset, my hope was to ‘make you feel’ something.
Scott Nies ‘17: Represents USA in the Touch Rugby World Cup
Over the summer, the Touch Rugby World Cup took place in Nottingham, England where many of our alumni were in attendance. We received updates that Scott represented the United States in the Mixed Open Touch Rugby team and fellow class year Hugh Goovaerts was there as a volunteer!
No sport has had such a profound impact on the trajectory of my life as rugby has. It was the honor and experience of a lifetime to take the field with this crew over the last couple of weeks. A huge thanks to everyone involved on the field, off the field, behind the scenes, and back home to make this dream a reality.
Ju Shen Lee ‘88 and Jeevan Sellappah ‘76: Keen to visit Bhutan, Laos or Cambodia?
Award-winning photographer, Ju Shen and her partner, Jeevan are no strangers to these parts of the world! They are providing their insider knowledge through their ‘UWC Ideals in Action’ project to showcase the remarkable people in the remote regions of these countries.
We want to encourage the UWC Community to visit, and thereby help create jobs, foster development, and increase prosperity there. Ultimately, it would create sustainable environments for commerce, employment, communities, and families to grow and flourish there.
