UWCSEA teams win Technopreneurship for Gender Equality #Codeathon

Two UWCSEA Dover student teams emerged as winners of the #codeathon 2017. Held across seven countries and nine cities, the #codeathon is a flagship regional hackathon on the theme of 'Technopreneurship for Gender Equality' supported by the U.S. State Department and US ASEAN Business Council.

The learning-intensive hackathon experience brought together both beginner and experienced coders, designers and business people to develop app prototypes under the gender equality theme.

Hequals, led by Arya Vohra, Taichi Kato and Khush Jammu in Grade 10, emerged as the Global Winner for the pre-university category with a $500 prize. Hequals is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) designed to "intelligently allocate tasks in a project or work environment by analysing team members skills" - without bias.

The second UWCSEA team submission, Road to Equality by Team VRQNK Coders, won the Most Socially Impactful prize in the pre-university category with a $250 prize. The team is made of five Grade 7 students: Vedant Bahadur, Qiheng Gao, Nirupama Kalyanaraman, Kashvi Johar and Wonjun Chang. Road to Equality is a game that teaches about gender inequality, builds empathy, and models breaking down gender inequality.

Both teams were invited to the Closing Ceremony hosted at Google Singapore on 27 March 2018. There they had the opportunity to meet the other global winners, tour the Google office, and participate in making their own AIY (Artificial Intelligence Yourself) Google Voice Kit.

The IDEAS Hub on Dover Campus hosted the opening ceremony and workshop for the #codeathon in March 2017, attended by over 100 students from local and international schools in Singapore including Tanglin Trust School, Nanyang Girls' High School and the National University of Singapore. All students participated in the two-day workshop including sessions such as Design Thinking and MIT App Inventor.

Congratulations to both UWCSEA teams on their winning apps!
