Students win big at Young Technopreneurs Challenge 2018

Students win big at Young Technopreneurs Challenge 2018

Three UWCSEA teams from both Dover and East won the top prizes at the Young Technopreneurs Challenge Expo and Finals ceremony on Saturday, 21 April 2018. Over 350 students participated in the Challenge which encourages students to take ownership of the world they live in and to actively develop solutions to the UN Sustainable Development goals.

Team COPE and Team INFINERGY won the Grand Champion prize for the 10-12 and 13-15 year old categories respectively. Both teams have won up to S$10,000 worth of funding for their projects, a five-day all-expense trip for all team members (and one lucky parent of each team member) to the USA, job shadowing at a global company based in the USA, and all access passes and a booth at Slush 2018 where they will be connecting with startups, investors and tech experts.

Team COPE, consisting of Rayner, Anders and Reuben (Grade 6, Dover Campus) impressed judges with their idea of building an app to help low-income families order basic necessities and access to sponsorship. If the families are selected to be sponsored, they will receive a special QR code to collect items at the supermarket. Working in partnership with medical social workers, these families can seek assistance to help receive the items with the app. Their project aims to help the 1.5 million people in Singapore who currently live below the poverty line.

Team INFINERGY, made up of Vatsal, Rehaan and Justin (Grade 9, East Campus) tackled the issue of providing equal access to affordable and clean energy to all. Their idea involved creating a device which converts kinetic energy into electricity to power up electrical devices such as handphones or household appliances. Team INFINERGY would like to express their gratitude to Mr Kann, East HL Physics teacher, and Mr Terence Ang from the Community Lab@UWCSEA who generously shared their experience and gave their time to mentor the team throughout the competition.

The two Grand Champions are no strangers to participating in competitions. The team members of Team COPE won the grand prize at the inaugural LEGO Challenge business competition held in November 2017 under a different team name. While two of the Team INFINERGY members participated in previous editions of the LIFE Challenge@UWCSEA. Both competitions were organised by the IDEAS Hub in collaboration with LEGO Singapore and tGELF.

Team FUTURE won the Most Innovative Prize for the 10-12 year old category. Soomin, Anabelle and Tessa (Grade 6, Dover Campus) came up with an innovative approach to tackling gender inequality. They hope to decrease female illiteracy in families by extending tablet based learning support for girls in Grades 1-8 in local languages in English, Math and Science. Team Future, as a runner up team can choose between anApple Watch, PS4 VR or Pro as prizes.

The IDEAS Hub team is very proud of all the teams from UWCSEA who have done exceptionally well in creating innovative and sustainable ideas to help shape a better world. We are happy to have played a part in providing platforms for the teams by giving them exposure and practice in the run-up to the Young Technopreneurs Challenge.
