On 6 March 2017, Dover Campus found itself transformed into an incredible celebration of jazz music and uncontrollable fun.
Jazz for Nepal was an exquisite showcase of the College’s musical talent, from both students and teachers from Dover and East campuses. It was an amazing concert, including the all impressive senior jazz band, various teachers and a special performance by our very own Jennifer Gullery. Afterwards, the audience found themselves immersed in extraordinary music as played by the world famous Tropic Green, with original tunes written by Susan Harmer. Additionally, the audience took part in fun games throughout the night, such as betting on which musician could play the longest on one leg, and who could play Donna Lee the fastest. One very generous participant bid $900 for a one-of-a-kind electric guitar, signed by the talented Tropic Green. Sodexo provided a mouth watering buffet for all, and all-in-all, it was a night to remember.
A huge thanks to Susan Harmer for organizing this night and donating all the proceeds to CWIN GC and Himalayan GC (two of Dover Campus's Global Concerns). The concert raised an incredible $3,835 for the children in Nepal. The money raised by these organizations goes towards various infrastructure projects, which are more crucial than ever following the 2015 earthquake. As well as this, these groups aim to enact social and political change through lobbying, protesting and rehabilitation programs for the many vulnerable children of Nepal. In a country where over 30% of children below the age of 14 are forced into labor, these Global Concerns make it their aim to ensure the safety and human rights of the Nepalese children.
Thanks again to Susan Harmer and to Tropic Green for so generously giving up their time and efforts to put together such a wonderful event, for amazing music, and for donating to such a great cause. Thanks to our wonderful audience, talented musicians, staff, parent and student volunteers, the Facilities team and Sodexo, Jazz for Nepal will go a long way towards helping those in need. Thank you to everyone who made this such a fun and joyous event!
