Grade 1 students go on Forest Adventure Ropes course in Bedok Reservoir
By Mary Louise Newbigin, Teacher of Primary School, East Campus
"Believe in yourself."
"You'll feel great once you've done it!"
"Take your time..."
These were the words from UWCSEA East Grade 1 students as they encouraged one another across the Forest Adventure Ropes course in Bedok Reservoir.
The excitement had been building for weeks as we held Morning Meetings discussing how we overcome fears, what it means to be resilient and how our words and actions have an impact on those around us. During Morning Meetings the Grade 1 students learn what it means to be a part of a successful and supportive community. Caring for each other, empathising and building relationships to create a bond at the start of the new school year.
In addition Grade 1 students began to recognise their own mindset. We discussed growth mindsets in all areas of the curriculum and learned to replace phrases such as "I can't" and "It's impossible" with more positive language.
We put all our class-based theory to the test high up on the Forest Adventure ropes course. "I can do this if I stay calm"; "It's not impossible, so it must be possible" and even "I've not done as much as my friends but it's fine because I've done my best!"
But most of all we all giggled and laughed and had a great time with new classmates!
