East Primary School celebrates International Mother Language Day
By Pauline Markey, Primary School Principal, East Campus
This week we had the pleasure of hosting a very special International Mother Language Day to coincide with the UNESCO event day itself. This is a worldwide annual observance held on 21 February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, and multi-lingualism.
A dedicated and talented group of parents joined us on Wednesday to celebrate their Mother Language with the Primary School students. It was a wonderful community event where the children had the opportunity to visit the numerous displays set up by parents in the area outside the Primary School library and learn more about different languages.
Throughout Primary School, children were engaged in learning activities in their classrooms from watching related clips, making language labels for familiar items, sharing stories with their High School buddies in their Mother Language, and lots of class discussions. The children were clearly proud to share their own Mother Language. It was wonderful to listen to the children and share in their curiosity for languages.
A huge thank you to an amazing team of parents who coordinated the wonderful event, most notably Lisa Lee, ably assisted by Hajerah from the Primary Office and Deb Gordon, Primary School Vice Principal.
