East 2016/2017 Activities Season 1 round up

As we witnessed the closing of another epic Olympic and Paralympic Games hosted in Rio, we turn our minds and focus now to our own individual talents and the commitment from our students at UWCSEA East. I think it is appropriate to think about the values of the games, the motto on which they were founded and how this relates to us in the pursuit of our own goals. These principles do not just relate to sport: they are fundamental ideas on which the desire to ‘be the best that we can be’ are founded.

What we, as spectators, can learn from the Games is not just from the qualities of the athletes we see before us, but from the examples of camaraderie, humility, modesty and dignity that we will undoubtedly see constantly on display.

At East, we are already in full swing of Season 1 with over 270 students trying out for Middle School Sport and now training and competing across our local ACSIS Sports Conference, 29 students preparing for their devised works in Drama and over 100 students in our music programmes. In the High School, over 330 students enrolled for sports tryouts, 320 for CultuRama auditions and 160 auditioned for drama productions of Macbeth and Jesus Christ Superstar. We can certainly conclude that students at UWCSEA East are taking opportunities to get involved.

The campus has been a hive of energy, learning and excitement from 3.10–6pm each day where classrooms, dance studios, drama and music spaces, and sports facilities are bursting with students eager to learn, develop and achieve throughout our Activities programmes. This has been fantastic to watch and I know this year we will continue to deliver and provide the best possible experiences for our students.

In the forthcoming season and year, I hope the Olympic motto 'Faster, Higher, Stronger' will continue to inspire you to pursue your goals, your ambitions and challenge yourselves to be the ‘best that you can be’.
