The Ears of East politics podcast club: Opening up political discussion in the UWCSEA East community
By Ears of East podcast group
Inspired by the range of excellent podcasts now available, the ‘Ears of East’ politics podcast group is a new and exciting High School activity that meets weekly to discuss contemporary political issues. We pitch issues and ideas to each other, decide on the direction that we want to head and then record, edit, and post our episodes on the Ears of East website.
The political issues that we choose to discuss vary greatly. We have discussed issues on a global scale such as the persecution of the Uyghurs in Western China, and the perception and impact on students in the UWCSEA community of the #metoo campaign, especially in light of the recent ad by Gillette against ‘toxic masculinity’.
The group have also focussed on political issues operating at the local level in UWCSEA community, such as how we discuss and respect LGBT issues. Whatever main topic of the podcast, the discussion always leads to intriguing and important questions about the socio-political state of the world we live in and what it means in the present and for the future.
The aim of the group is to both educate the UWCSEA community about current political issues and to open up political discussions that we can all benefit from. To do this, we have tried to engage the student body by including interviews, inviting representatives from service groups to attend the discussion, surveying students and sharing the podcast episodes on different social media platforms that the students will hopefully connect with.
Ears of East hopes to broaden its horizon and reach as many members of the UWCSEA community as possible in the remainder of this school years and into the next.
