Dragons Swimming report on TTS Merlion Sprint Festival

On Saturday, 6 October 2018 the UWCSEA East Dragons Swim Team competed at this year's Tanglin Trust School (TTS) Merlion Sprint Festival. Sixty amazing swimmers turned up at 6.30 in the morning ready to compete, with many swimmers excited to only swim the sprint events. The Merlions Sprint Festival is one of the few meets the Dragons compete in which includes both heats and finals, which allowed the younger swimmers to practise a new concept.

The meet started after a hectic warm-up with the mixed 11 & over 100m butterfly, with Mia touching in 6th with a 1:18.8 and with Tanisha touching not far behind in 8th, Kento swimming a 2-second personal best (PB) to touch in 3rd with a 1:15.68. With the older swimmers not long after, Ruby touched in 2nd place with a best time, with Lucy finishing in 8th; the boys also had some great races with Owen touching in 3rd and Hamza swimming a superb 1:01.93 that came out of absolutely nowhere.

Next up was the 100m backstroke - on the girls side there were some amazing swims from both Tanvi and Dominique and Alle touched 1st in the 15 & over final to grab the gold. On the boys side Giles had a great swim to take 5th in the 11-12 final and Adam dropped two seconds to touch 3rd in the 13-14 final, and In the 15 & over final Jeremy and Owen touched 2nd and 3rd respectively to finish off the event.

Shortly after it was time for the 200m IM, with Olivia dropping an incredible 21 seconds and Isabella swimming a huge PB with a 2:56.94, and rounding off the girls Ruby swam an impressive 2:33.52 to touch first. On the boys side Kento dropped two seconds to finish 2nd, shortly after Lucas dropped four seconds in a solid swim, and to round off the event Jeremy and Ben finished 5th and 7th in the 15 & over age group. 

The next event was the 100m breaststroke. On the girls side Adi swam just outside her best to touch 2nd and Ruby dropped 5 seconds with a incredible swim to touch in 5th. Kento swam another PB finishing just outside the podium and Jasper had a stand-out swim finishing 1st in his age group with a 1:12.15, with Loch swimming just outside his best, finishing 4th. Ben swam a 1:12.25 finishing in 2nd with Gus not far behind in 4th and David in 8th.

The final event for the morning session was the 11 & over 100m freestyle, which saw Nea finish 9th in her age group with a 1:10.71,  Isabella swimming a best time dropping 8 seconds, and the girls finished the morning off with Alle coming 1st and Lucy and Poppy coming in behind her finishing 9th and 10th. The boys were next with Oliver dropping a huge 19 second PB, and Aditya swimming a 1.7 second PB. The morning session ended with the older boys and saw Nicolai coming in 2nd with Alex coming close behind in 5th.

The afternoon session started with the 50m fly. The girls started with Klaudia finishing 2nd and Ninah coming in 9th in the 8-10 age group. In the 11-12 age group, Dominique finished 9th and Nea swam a PB just missing out on the finals. In the 13-14 age group Mia swam just outside her best to finish in 9th. In the 15 & over age group, Ruby finished in 3rd with a PB and Alle came in just behind in 4th. The boys were up next with Ansel started them off finishing 7th in the 8-10 age group, Jasper finished 7th in 13-14 finals with Kiril and Lucas just missing out on the finals. Finishing off the 50m fly Owen and Alex finished 1st and 2nd with Hamza, Chien and Roope finishing behind them.

The 50m backstroke started with Klaudia tying for 5th in the 8-10 age group final with Linda just missing out by one spot. Dominique swam a great PB finishing 9th in the 11-12 final, Isabella swam a 2-second PB in the heats but just missed out on a spot in the 13-14 age group finals. Kento finished finished 2nd with a PB in his age group with Giles close behind in 6th. In the 13-14 final, Adam just missed a podium finish touching in 4th. The 15 & over boys put on a show to finish the 50m back, with Chien, Owen and Jeremy sweeping the podium.

Soon after was the 50m breaststroke, which started off with Linda swimming a PB to touch 1st in the 8-10 age group, with Klaudia finishing 3rd and Ninah not far behind in 5th. Jhanvi swam a PB just missing out on a finals spot. The boys were up next with Ansel grabbing a podium finish touching in 3rd in the 8-10 age group, Joachiem and Kevin finished 8th and 9th respectively in the 11-12 age group final. Jasper finished 1st in the 13-14 final with Rasmus and Loch finishing close behind coming 5th and 6th and Samh rounded off the final coming in 10th. The 15 & over boys finished the 50m breast with Ben and Gus touching 2nd and 3rd and with David and Hamza not far behind in 7th and 8th.

The final event of the day was the 50m free, and it kicked off with Klaudia coming in 3rd and Linda coming 9th in the 8-10 age group. Dominique swam just outside her best coming 7th in the 11-12 finals, Isabella swam another PB but just missed out the finals. The girls concluded the meet with a 1st place finish from Alle and Lucy and Poppy following in 8th and 9th. The boys finals started with Ansel finishing 10th in the 8-10 age group final, Joachiem finishing 5th in the 11-12 final. Jasper and Loch just missed out on the 13-14 finals but both swam great races. The meet concluded with the 15 & over final in which Nicolai finished in 2nd with Jeremy close behind in 4th, just missing out on a podium finish, Chien and Roope rounded off the final finishing 9th and 10th.

It was a great weekend for the Dragons with many great swims and a huge number of PBs (simply too many to include every one here). Congratulations to Alle for winning overall girl for her age group.
