Dragons' Report: Athletes shine at Dragons' Track and Field Junior School Invitational
By Ian Deeth, Head of Junior School Activities, East Campus
On Sunday 28 April, UWCSEA East campus hosted a 3-way Track and Field invitational event against the Australian International School and the Overseas Family School, giving many Junior School students their first taste of competitive athletics in a fun and friendly environment.
The aim of the meet was to ensure every student had a positive athletics experience. This saw all students participating in five different events which comprised two sprints (75m and 200m) a jumping event and a throwing event. The meet concluded with a mixed schools shuttle relay.
Rather than traditional medals for first, second and third, students competed against ‘Gold’, ‘Silver’, ‘Bronze’ and ‘Participation’ standards depending on how far they jumped or threw or how fast they ran. They were given corresponding stickers which were recorded on a special card. Students were able to take these cards home at the end of the event. This meant that there were many winners on the morning and students strived for a personal best rather than just simply trying to beat each other.
A huge thanks to the parents who helped support and run events, athletics coaches and UWCSEA facilities staff.
