The art of doodling: Middle School Art workshop with Band of Doodlers

East Middle School Art students recently had a unique opportunity to explore the art of doodling with Singapore-based mural artists, Band of Doodlers. Thanks to support from the UWCSEA Foundation, the East Art Department was able to bring these artists to campus on 25 January for an artist-in-residence workshop.

The Band of Doodlers has worked with schools around Singapore. The artists find inspiration from Singapore and its surroundings, and their artistic style is both fun and accessible. Some of their doodles share stories, folk law and icons from Singapore culture.

Middle School students were invited to submit a proposal explaining why they would like to have the opportunity to work with these artists. From the submissions, 20 students from Grade 6–8 were selected to participate in the two-hour workshop.

Artist David Liew of Band of Doodlers began the workshop by introducing the students to the project, sharing some sample drawings and tips about what works well on a doodle mural. For example, he encouraged the students to start by drawing larger images and then to fill in remaining spaces with smaller ones. He also showed them how to use lines and to connect neighboring designs and to fill in some spaces and drawings with black to add to the overall impact of the mural.

In less than two hours, the students along with three Band of Doodlers artists, created a collaborative mural for the school centred around the five elements of the UWCSEA learning programme. The impressive mural is a welcome addition to East Campus!

The Band of Doodlers art workshop was funded by the Shripriya Mahesh Ramanan and Ramanan Raghavendran Artist-in-Residence Programme, part of a family endowment gift made through the UWCSEA Foundation.
