Parents, Alumni, Students and Teachers attend the Magic Bus Gala at The Capella Hotel, March 2016
“Magic Bus steers children towards a better life with better awareness, better life skills, and better opportunities, in the journey from childhood to livelihood”.
The 2016 Magic Bus Singapore Gala saw previous donors, parents, alumni, students and teachers come together for an evening of support and generosity for the remarkable work of Magic Bus. The organising committee, the majority of whom are UWCSEA parents, work for months to gain sponsorship and to organise the event. This year’s gala benefit was held at The Capella Hotel on Sentosa and the special guest was Bollywood actor and sports entrepreneur, Abhishek Bachchan. International media personality and UWCSEA Alumna, Anita Kapoor, was the host for the evening. and Anita has given her time to host each of the gala benefits since the inaugural event. Ritu Pawa, a 15 year old girl currently in the Magic Bus Programme in India, shared her experience in a Q&A session with Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan.
Matthew Spacie, the founder, explained to guests that The Magic Bus Singapore galas raise funds that support entire neighborhoods in many of India’s slums. Donations help Magic Bus to “create a supportive community that invests in children's education and protects their rights, so that by the time they grown up, these children can find dignified livelihood options, pulling their entire family out of poverty.” Through a live and silent auction and the adopting of villages, the event raised in excess of $500,000 which will go a long way in helping secure a positive future for as many as 16,000 children in India.
Magic Bus became a Global Concern on Dover Campus in 2009. The GC continues to support and work towards the goals that Matthew Spacie set out to fulfill. In school, Magic Bus GC runs high quality coffee sales for major school events and has 20 dedicated and consistent members. Many members of the GC attended this year’s Gala to meet the founder of the organisation and fully understand where all the work is going and how the funding is implemented.
