How We Make a Decision

This page explains the UWCSEA entry criteria and our application review process before we make an offer for a place.

Overview of How We Make a Decision

Our policy to allocate places at UWCSEA is driven by our mission, and our commitment to diversity and variety of experience.

Each year, we have two application rounds, and two rounds of offers for enrollment. We do not offer places on a first-come first-serve basis and we review all applications carefully to ensure every child can thrive from their first day at the College.

Application Review & Eligibility

Our initial review determines if an applicant meets our baseline entry criteria such as immigration and residency status. Once an applicant is deemed eligible, they join our application pool.

The number of eligible applicants typically exceeds the places available, so we use a holistic framework to decide who receives an offer from this pool. These considerations include (but are not limited to):

Mission Alignment: The applicant's potential to embody our mission and values.
Previous schooling: To ensure admitted students are able to thrive at the College
Experiences and activities: As part of our commitment to a holistic education and experiential learning.
English proficiency: To establish what support, if any, applicants may require as part of their learning experience.
Cohort Balance: To ensure a diverse, balanced student body in line with the College's commitment to diversity and variety of experience.
Age and Grade: To ensuring we are able to provide the support the applicant may need with the resources available at each grade level.

Additional Information

We sometimes ask families to provide additional information so that we can clarify if we are able to support students, particularly those with English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Learning Support needs. This may include asking to contact the applicant's current school or inviting an applicant to complete age-appropriate assessments or interviews. Read more on our Assessments and Interviews page.

Application Outcomes

Following the review and allocation process, parents are advised of one of two outcomes:

  • Offer of a Place: The applicant is selected from the eligible pool during one of our offer rounds.
  • Application Closed: The applicant does not meet the entry criteria, or other factors, and we are unable to offer a place.

Below, is more information about the baseline and other criteria we consider.
