English Language Requirements

This page explains the English proficiency requirements and English language support available at each grade. It also describes how this impacts the timing of an offer.

We support English Language Learners in Every Grade

All students at UWCSEA are supported in developing academic language skills as part of our learning programme. The timing and intensity of support for English Language Learners varies depending on the proficiency of the student and their grade, and is offered through our English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme.

In some cases, if we need more information to determine whether an applicant will need EAL support, we invite them to participate in an admissions assessment. Please visit our Assessments and Interviews page for details about EAL assessments at each grade level.

Do note that:

  • Some students who have already exited an EAL programme at their current school may still receive EAL support at UWCSEA in order to develop their academic English skills.
  • Applicants currently studying in bilingual programmes may or may not meet our entry criteria. We may reach out to the applicant’s current school to provide additional information about the child’s English language and literacy skills.

English Proficiency Guidance by Grade

  • Kindergarten 1-2 (Primary School): Students must be able to follow simple instructions and communicate some ideas in English without support.

  • Grades 1-5 (Primary School): Students without 1-3 years of English Medium Instruction (EMI) schooling are unlikely to meet our entry requirements.

  • Grades 6-8 (Middle School): Students without 2-3 years of English Medium Instruction (EMI) schooling are unlikely to meet our entry requirements.

  • Grades 9-11 (High School): High School applicants need to demonstrate sufficient academic English proficiency to access our High School programme.

We invite you to explore more details about English as an Additional Language (EAL) support by grade on our website.
