Boarding School Entry Criteria
This page explains specific eligibility requirements, commitments, and assessment steps for boarding school applications at UWCSEA. For information about the boarding experience, visit our Boarding at UWCSEA page.
Eligible Grades and Ages for Boarding
Starting from the August 2027 intake, boarding will only be available for students entering Grade 9 (14 years old) and above.
Family Residency Requirement
As the only Singapore boarding school with residences located on our East and Dover campuses, the boarding houses are designed as full-time residential communities for international students.
- The 90% Rule: Boarding is exclusively intended for students whose families will not be residing in Singapore for 90% or more of the term-time during the school year.
- Boarding Options: UWCSEA offers full-time boarding only. We do not offer weekly, weekday, or single-term boarding options.
Application and Assessment
The general entry criteria for boarders are identical to those for day students. Applicants must demonstrate a positive approach to learning, an appropriate level of English proficiency, and an academic profile indicating they can progress with confidence within our curriculum. For details read our section: Check Your Child's Eligibility.
- Dual Campus Consideration: Unlike day student applicants, prospective boarders are automatically considered for a place at both the Dover and East campuses.
- UWCSEA Nominee Programme (UNP): Please note that boarding applicants are not eligible to be nominated through the corporate UNP route.
The Boarding Interview
To ensure a student is socially and emotionally suited for our residential community, all eligible boarding applicants must complete a formal interview. It's 30 to 45 minutes in length and typically conducted online via video conference by our Director of Residential Life or a Houseparent. More information is available on our Assessments and Interviews page.
Minimum Commitment
To foster a stable, deeply connected boarding community, students accepted into the residential programme must commit to a specific minimum duration:
- Grades 9 and 10: Must commit to boarding for at least one full school year.
- Grades 11 and 12: Must commit to remaining in boarding for the full two-year duration of the IB Diploma Programme in Singapore.
