Assessments and Interviews
This page explains the purpose, format and logistics of our admissions assessments and interviews which include assessments related to English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Learning Support.
Admissions Assessments Overview
Assessments and interviews form a part of our application review process. If we feel we need more information about a candidate, beyond what is shared in the application form, we may:
- request additional documents and/or
- invite them to an assessment
We use the information gathered in assessments and interviews to:
- Verify Eligibility: Confirm the applicant meets our baseline UWCSEA admission requirements and entry criteria.
- Guide Offer Decisions: Evaluate the applicant against our holistic profile to help determine who will be offered a place from the eligible pool. Refer to our How We Make a Decision page for criteria and application review process.
- Determine Support Capacity: Understand the child’s specific learning needs and ensure the College has the resources to support them, in areas such as English as an Additional Language and Learning Support.
Assessments of Specific Learning Needs
English as an Additional Language (EAL) Assessments
Applicants who are English Language Learners (ELLs) may require an EAL assessment. These differ by grade and are explained in detail in the section below.
To read more about our baseline criteria for English proficiency by grade, please visit our English Language Requirements page.
- Initial Review: If an applicant will require significant support that the College is unable to offer, we will close the application without any further assessment.
- Further Assessment: We may decide to close the application at a later stage. Please note: at whatever stage an EAL application is closed, there will be no refund of the application fee.
Learning Support Assessments
When an applicant indicates they may require learning support, our Admissions and Learning Support teams collaborate to ensure we have the right resources to support them.
To read more about Learning Support options at UWCSEA please visit our dedicated page.
- Initial Review: We carefully evaluate school reports, external assessments, and may request a confidential reference from previous schools.
- Further Assessment: Applicants are typically invited for an assessment or interview to confirm we can effectively support their individual needs.
- Offer Timeline: Although assessments begin in September, we are usually unable to make offers to learning support applicants in the first round. We must first evaluate our current students' ongoing needs—a process completed by February—before we can confirm how many places are available for new students requiring support.
How Parents can help
We understand that admissions assessments can cause anxiety. Our goal is simply to understand your child as a learner. Assessments are facilitated by expert teachers who specialise in making children feel at ease so they can naturally demonstrate their capabilities. Frame the assessment as a low-pressure opportunity to visit the school and meet teachers. Please ensure your child wears comfortable clothing and eats a typical breakfast before attending.
