UWCSEA celebrates 50 years in Singapore
“There is more to us than we know. If we can be made to see it, perhaps for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less.” Kurt Hahn, Founder, UWC movement
In 1962, Kurt Hahn founded the first UWC in the UK with a powerful mission to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. Nine years later in 1971, Lee Kuan Yew opened our College in Singapore, the second of what is now a network of 18 schools and colleges across the globe.
Connected through our theme There is More in Us, we are planning a year-long celebration of our mission, launching a series of community-centred events with the August 2021 reunion. Many exciting elements will come together in the 2021/2022 school year involving students, staff, parents, alumni and our global community of partners. We will also be connecting more deeply with Singapore, as the place which made us, and in April 2022 look forward to convening a global forum Learning to Shape the Future.
We look forward to sharing further details in due course. We encourage as many of you as possible to get involved in the celebrations (and their organisation!) and our Steering Committee will be seeking expressions of interest early in 2021.
It will be an exciting year, an opportunity to recommit to our vision of what a better world can be and to articulate our hopes for the future.
Launch event: reunion weekend
20–21 August 2021
Our annual milestone reunion weekend will serve to bring together past and present through a series of events celebrating milestone anniversary classes and engaging our global alumni community. Whether we are able to gather in Singapore or connect virtually this will be a wonderful way to start our celebratory year.
Celebrating our community
August 2021–May 2022
Students, staff, parents and alumni will be invited to join our celebrations through a theme running through some of our beloved annual events, such as the UN Night, Culturama, the Dover Community Fair, and the East Family Festival.
Strengthening our partnerships
August 2021–June 2022
Valuing our relationships, recognising our connections, and coming together to look for ways to build on and expand our partnerships for the future will be an important way for the College to continue our contribution – to our students, our staff, our global community of educators, and to Singapore, the place that made us who we are today.
Capstone event: UWCSEA 50th anniversary forum
29 April – 1 May 2022
Under the theme Learning to Shape the Future, the forum will feature guests who have contributed to making UWCSEA who we are today, as well as those who might help us imagine our future, including:
