No Drive Day - Wednesday this week (29th)

Thanks to the immense success of the first No Drive Day (8th March), LEAF GC will be holding a second No Drive Day on Wednesday, the 29th of May. We would like to continue promoting to parents and students the idea of taking public transport and walking to school that morning.

It is crucial that we have more volunteers as we want to ensure parents that their children (especially infants) are completely safe. As we're lacking in manpower,teachers and high school students are encouraged to volunteer walking infants into school. (Counts for one-off CAS for Grade 11s)

On March 8th we counted 200 cars only arriving on campus. We hope that we can make this No Drive Day just as successful (or maybe even more) than the previous one!

(P.S. A reward (bananas) will be given to students who walk into school.)

MS ART DRIVE EBRIEF

Thursday, 29^th and Friday, 30^th May is a day for all artists, introverts, extroverts, teachers and students alike. Surman GC is hosting an art drive during all middle school and high school break times and lunchtimes.

Find our canvases under the tent and exploit it as you may with our selection of bright colours at your disposal. Vent your feelings by throwing a paint-filled balloon at the canvases and laugh as your friends get splattered. Or for all brownies, cookies and baked goods lovers, buy one our treats and get a free balloon throw.

Your donations, as always, will go towards Surman GC in our quest to better the lives of street children in Jaipur, India. We’ll be working with Bauhauß (Art society) to create a masterpiece you may all vie for at our auction coming up. Look out for us.

Looking for Student Ambassadors for The Love of Three Oranges

We are looking for Student Ambassadors to help out at the Middle School Drama Production, The Love of Three Oranges, with ticket sales at the door and to help to show people to their seats. The play is taking place on Thursday 30 May, Friday 31 May and Saturday 1 June. Your assistance on one of these nights would be much appreciated.
In return for helping out for one hour, from 6-7pm, you will receive a ticket to see the show on the night that you are helping (please don't sign up to help if you are in the production!). The play runs without interval and will finish at approximately 8.30pm.

2. Drama

The Love of Three Oranges by Hillary DiPiano

This year's Middle School Drama production is the fantastic comedy, The Love of Three Oranges by Hillary DiPiano. The play is inspired by the Italian theatre style, Commedia dell'Arte and tells the story of Prince Tartaglia (Hugues Martin Dit Neuville) who is cursed to fall in love with the three oranges by the evil witch Fata Morgana (Aditi Poovaiah). Prince Tartaglia and his friend, the court jester Truffaldino (Leinad Walker), begin their quest to rescue the oranges and save the royal kingdom. Featuring the music, fashion and energetic dance numbers of the 1980s this production is sure to have you dancing in the aisles.

This production is being staged in the Auditorium from Thursday May 30 until Saturday June 1 at 7pm (running time is estimated to be 80 minutes). Tickets are $15 and available from the UWCSEA East Cashier. This production is suitable for all ages.

3. Service

Upcoming events: Grade 8 semi-formal 17th May supporting Kampot Khmer has been postponed to June 18th (see details below), Krousar Thmey are having lunchtime events such as hitting piñata and a giant crossword on May 17th as well as cakes, GOONJ is holding a clothes drive on Monday May 20th and SOS GC Motion for the Ocean day 31st May. See info posters around school. More information to follow.
Also being planned - the Girl Effect movie night. Info is coming!
6th Grade - please write your comments on the service board papers in the corridor.
Kampot Khmer trip students - please pay if you haven’t done so, and please go around with your absence paper (get it in the MS office).

4. Music

Trinity Exams , 22 May 2013

The first of two Trinity classical exams are in the Music department on Wednesday 22 May.
Make sure you know your time and date. Any questions, ask the Music Office.

Primary Colours - the Primary School Concert - 6.00pm - 7.00pm
Secondary Colours - the Middle School Concert - 7.30pm - 8.45pm

These two concerts provide a showcase for the Primary and Middle school ensembles. We think these groups have all made fantastic progress since the Nakasonica and Minimusonica concerts.

Tickets are free, and will be available from Reception from 27th May.

Sound Asylum, 11 June 2013

This event, to be held in the Blackbox Theatre is the end of year follow up to Unplugged. Middle School and High School students will perform an eclectic mix of original pieces and songs that raise awareness of important issues as well as student bands rocking the stage. It promises to be an amazing evening. Ticket and GC details to follow.

5. Art

Whole School Art Showcase - Month of May

The East Art Departments (Junior, Middle and High) are currently running an Art Exhibition Showcase of the work of students Grade 2- 12. It is the first exhibition of this kind run at UWC East and level of artistic talent is outstanding. Within this exhibition we have an "Artist Spotlight" Matt Levy currently working as the Art technician at UWC East, he is a master printmaker and painter his work is displayed in the 2 floor lobby of A block. Another discovered talent Loy Kin Seng (our own UWC security guard) has his brush painting and calligraphy on exhibition in the A Block 6th floor foyer gallery. Art teachers Rebecca Maynard, Sarah McCarrison and Steve Hickey are also displaying their artwork on the 6th floor A block in various spaces. All welcome.

6. Sports

All sports team players (from season 1 to 4) are to return their jersey back to the sports office by Thursday, 23 May.

7. Science

WHAT IF......your class mates were TV stars? Filming commenced on Sunday for our Grade 6 and 8 students involved in the science TV show, ‘The Badge’. An intensive 2 week production phase will now take place for our intrepid inventors with a view to the show being aired sometime in June on the ‘Okto’ channel. Stay tuned for more information shortly

Dear Grade 11,

We would like to ask you to nominate a worthy peer to receive an award called the Student and Staff Nominated UWCSEA Award which can be awarded to up to 10 students in Grade 11. Award winners are chosen based on the number of recommendations received from both students and staff.

Please make your nomination on the form given in TG folders.Qualities we ask you to consider when recommending worthy peers are:

A student's effort and commitment - what they add to their classes (not necessarily academic prowess, but enthusiasm and interest).
How involved the student is in activities - again not the number of activities necessarily, but genuine engagement.
Their approach to service - service involvement, GCs, coaching younger students etc.
How pro-active they are in addressing any concerns or introducing new initiative?
Their approach to students and staff - how considerate and thoughtful are they?

Nominations should be returned to Dewi via TG folder by Monday, 27 May.

UWCSEA Dover students success in UK Mathematics Challenge

In February, 49 students from Grades 8, 9 and 10 participated in the UK Intermediate Mathematics Challenge. This multiple-choice challenge took place in the exam hall after school. Thirty four students achieved a Gold certificate, eight achieved Silver and four achieved Bronze. Brahm Capoor (Grade 10) was the top performer from UWCSEA and deserves special mention for achieving a perfect score of 135.

High scoring students are invited to sit an additional competition, either the Kangaroo or Olympiad. Seventeen students were invited to sit the Kangaroo and six achieved certificates of merit: Zachary Intrater, Raj Jaisinghani, Anirudh Baddepudi, Neel Pujari, Ananya Iyer and Juneho Hwang.

Ten students were invited to sit the Olympiad paper, which is very different in style compared to the others, having only six questions and requiring students to write full solutions to each. There is also a different paper for each grade. In this demanding contest, five students achieved a certificate of merit: Eu Bin Park, Nanako Ishikawa, Jae Hwan Jeong, Vaibhav Gattani, Seung Won Park. Brahm Capoor achieved a certicate of distinction. Kaushal Alate, Suk Joon Hwang and Harshvadhan Bakshi achieved a certificate of distinction and a medal for scoring in the top 100. The best performance was from Yoo Jin Lee who scored in the top 50, achieving a certificate of distinction, a medal and a book prize.

Ice skating gold for Singapore won by Dover Campus student

Competing in her first international competition, Dover Campus Grade 7 student Nadja Chong recently won an historic gold for Singapore in the Junior D Girls Divison at the International Skating Union World Development Trophy in Short Track Speed Skating. This was one of the first-ever international gold medals for ice skating awarded to a Singapore athlete.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak addresses TechLIFE conference

Developing the idea of Art

All students in the College take art as a double period each week until Grade 8. In the High School, the curriculum then offers options for students to pursue art courses in depth in both the (I)GCSE and in the IB DP. The recent High School Visual Art exhibition on Dover Campus was a showcase of art in a variety of forms, including portraiture, sculpture, installation, drawing and more.

SEASAC Arts Convention
