In the July - August 2009 holidays, Ywen (4SZi), Ysien (6EBr) and the Lau family travelled to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia for the TOUCHÉ Junior Foil Grand Finals. This is an international fencing competition held annually with teams from Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
Ywen was entered in the 9 years mixed category. This was the largest category, with almost 20 boys and girls from the four countries. Ywen fenced brilliantly in all her bouts on the way to the final (against an excellent Hong Kong fencer). The final was a nail-biting, hard-fought battle, from which Ywen emerged the champion by one point!
Ywen was also entered in the 12 years girls category (with some really big fencers!). Ywen fenced extremely well and made it to the quarter-finals! Alas, there she met her sister, Ysien (aged 11)! Ysien defeated Ywen 15-13 and then went on to win the silver medal in this category.
On 6-7 September 2009, Fencing Singapore (the national fencing federation) held its annual national fencing competition known as the Minime for young fencers aged 14 years and under.
At age eleven, Ysien was the youngest competitor entered in the 14-&-Under Girls Individual Foil championship. There were about 35 girls in this age category alone, most of whom will be vying for national team places in the near future.
Ysien fenced brilliantly, conceding a total of only 16 points in the seven bouts she fenced on the way to the final. The final was a heart-stopping bout against an experienced left-handed fencer. Ysien emerged the champion by one point!
Ysien is now the youngest fencer to ever win this national championship for this age category.
